Figure 1. Development and differentiation of a representative follicle cultured for 12 days in the continuous presence of 10 mIU/ml FSH. Early preantral follicles (follicular stage) are put into culture and after 4 days the follicles develop to late preantral follicles (diffuse stage). During the second half of the culture period the follicle mural and cumulus cell differentiation becomes apparent, resulting in the formation of antral‐like cavities (antral stage). The follicles differentiate into pre‐ovulatory follicles. Eighteen hours after the ovulation stimulus (given on day 12), mucified cumulus–oocyte complexes are free‐floating in the culture droplet.
